Led of the Spirit into the wilderness…
Alone…
Forty days without food…
Tempted by the devil…

Above is a very brief summary of one of the most powerful portions of Scripture that cements for us a life message. A message regarding the TOOL the Lord has gifted us to have for our journey. To recap this very potent scenario we go to Luke 4:1-13. Jesus is led into the wilderness by the Spirit. And for forty days he is tempted by the devil. The Word says that Jesus ate nothing and when the days had ended it states that Jesus became hungry. The devil then came fully loaded ready to destroy the Prince of Peace, the Great I am. The enemy offered Jesus power, prestige and the world. Trying to distract Jesus from God’s divine purpose for His life. Do these temptations ring a bell in your life? Have you experienced the enemy attacking you in your vulnerability? He comes to rob, steal and destroy. There are many lessons in this text, but the one I want to focus on is what Jesus used to battle the temptations that the enemy hurled at him.

Verses 4, 8, and 12 give us a snapshot of something that is very relevant and important to our Christian journey. Really the Lord could have combated the enemy in numerous ways, but He chose to proclaim GOD’S WORD as He responded to each temptation. I believe this scenario is an example for us of the importance and potency of God’s Word in our life. Here we have the Son of God battling with the enemy and what He uses as His TOOL, to withstand and defeat the enemy is SCRIPTURE. Yes, the Word of God. He didn’t use meaningless words. He didn’t argue, debate or give way to the schemes of the enemy. Instead HE SPOKE THE LIVING WORD OF GOD. And the enemy of our soul must flee. Verse 13 states that “when the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.” The enemy is relentless in his assaults. This is why it is so important to know God’s Word.

I am convinced that God’s Word is the answer to anything that troubles us. I have discovered firsthand the life changing power of God’s Word. The Bible is a treasure! It is God’s love letter to us. And so many times this powerhouse book is just sitting dormant in our shelves and tables. But if you open up the Bible and dive into the richness that awaits you - the SCRIPTURES will become life and sustenance for your journey. The WORDS written in the pages between Genesis and Revelation are not just words they are GOD’S SPOKEN WORD. Empowered by His Spirit - loaded with great purpose.
